Paint Removers

Paint removers (also known as paint strippers) are chemicals designed to remove paint, varnish and other coatings. They are also used to clean the underlying surfaces. They are effective on substrates such as metal, wood and brickwork.

Most paint removers contain toxic, flammable or caustic materials. It is important for users to be aware of health and safety considerations. Always read labels and product data sheets before use. Remember to protect your eyes, skin and respiratory tract while using paint removers.

Conro offers a wide choice of paint removers from major manufacturers such as Ambersil.

Conro is an authorized distributor for Ambersil.

Types of paint removers

There are two main types of paint removers: solvent-based and caustic-based.

  • Solvent-based. They work by penetrating the paint and dissolving the bond between the coating and the substrate. The layer of paint then swells and detaches from the underlying surface.
  • Caustic-based. They work by breaking down the chemical bonds in the paint itself. The active ingredient is usually sodium hydroxide. Caustic-based paint removers need to be neutralised before applying a new coating.

Some paint removers contain corrosion inhibitors, in order to protect the underlying surface. Colorants and surfactants might be added as well.

Selecting the right paint remover

When choosing a paint remover, make sure to select a product suited to your specific needs. You should take into account three main factors: the type of surface, the condition of the surface and what paint has been used to coat it.

Solvent-based paint removers provide a clear and clean finish with no staining. However, they are not recommended for thick layers of built-up paint.

Caustic-based paint removers, on the other hand, are effective on thick layers of paint. They are easier to use on surfaces with detailed carvings, due to their consistency. However, they pose the risk of staining or scorching wooden surfaces.
