Silicone Conformal Coatings
Silicone conformal coatings are made with silicone resin. These coatings are known for their good adhesion to PCB surfaces. They are easy to apply and have a short curing time. They protect electronics from moisture and contaminants. Silicone coatings also have excellent electrical properties.
They are widely used in high-temperature environments. Their properties allow them to maintain stability during temperature cycling. Automotive applications often employ silicone coatings. Most silicones will withstand temperatures of 200°C.
They provide many other advantages. They are impervious to moisture. They provide a flexible coating, shielding PCBs from shocks. Their rubbery texture makes them resistant to vibrations.
ConRo Electronics offers a wide choice of silicone conformal coatings from major manufacturers such as Humiseal.
Conro Electronics is an authorized distributor for Humiseal.
Key advantages of silicone conformal coatings
- Excellent protection from humidity, corrosion and vibrations
- Excellent electrical properties
- Good chemical resistance
- Great performance in extreme temperatures
- High flexibility
- Easy to apply
- Short curing time (about one hour at room temperature)
Drawbacks of silicone conformal coatings
It is thicker than other coatings. They are not recommended for tight-fitting PCBs. The thick coating layers could put extra stress on the solder joints. Make sure the joints are strong enough.
Silicone coatings are difficult to remove. This is due to their chemical resistance. Unlike other conformal coatings, silicones do not vaporise with heat. Removal can be challenging. It can require specialised solvents or ultrasonic baths.
Make sure you know your application’s requirements beforehand. This will allow you to choose the right coating solution.
