A Safety Data Sheet (SDS) or also known as Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) is a document that the maker, importer, or distributor of a chemical product is obligated to submit to downstream users in accordance with the UN’s Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS). The act of developing a properly designed SDS is known as SDS writing. An SDS must have a certain 16-section format.

An SDS’s objective is to guarantee that all people who work with chemicals have the necessary hazard information to safely use, handle, and store them.

Regulation 12 of the COSHH laws in the United Kingdom mandates that employers give information, education, and training to employees who are exposed to hazardous substances. Without data sheets, it would be nearly impossible for employers to comply with this law, assuring safe chemical storage and handling. Employers must make certain that they receive a material safety data sheet from a substance’s source at all times. The MSDS should be kept in the area where the chemicals are stored or used for reference.
